Melvin Jay was killed during an incident involving Officer Braxton Shelton, who has four years of law enforcement experience, as officers responded to a reported breaking and entering at an apartment on the 5100 block of Suitland Road around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1. The caller, another resident of the apartment, was not home at the time.

Jay’s loved ones and other community members called for justice following the shooting with claims that it was not warranted.

Footage from the incident shows the officers enter the apartment unit at around the 1:25 minute mark as one of them starts to repeatedly yell, “show me your hands!”

The officers take a few steps into the apartment before Jay is shot and killed less than 10 seconds later.

Detectives recovered two handguns from the scene, one in Jay’s pocket and the other in the kitchen sink.

A statement made to Daily Voice on behalf of the family’s lead attorney on the case, Ronald Richardson, reads:

"The Murphy Falcon & Murphy law firm has been retained by the family of Melvin Jay. Our team has begun the initial phase of the case investigation and will refrain from providing further comments at this time."

The Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID) continues to investigate. Click here to view the full clip.
